What is needed for safe cyber operations

Commanding General U.S. Army 7th Signal Command Army Brig. Gen. Jennifer Napper discussed the constraints of working with cyber operations during a panel session. She explained how defense today is focused more on the network, instead of the information. Firewalls, access controls and detection systems can prevent sharing information even when it is necessary.

“Our war fighters want us to keep adapting to newer, better capabilities. We need more education on this. We need to retire all legacy applications. We need to be able to conduct cyber warfare just like we do with other war fighting capabilities. We need clear rules of engagement beyond the right to self-defense.”

Napper suggested implying smart sensors with automated alerts that work directly with the system will help cyber operating through hostile environments.
