Mercy Corps’ Director of Public Affairs Dr. Heather Hanson talked about the importance of development during a panel session discussing the future security environment.
“I find there is an inadequate understanding of how development projects help with security. If you build something, that doesn’t mean it won’t get blown up later, that doesn’t mean it will be in the right place, or even be the right thing. Proper knowledge of development can create social systems where people have enough security that they aren’t as liable to participate in extremist movements and damage U.S. prospects.”
Hanson also comments on ‘smart power’ saying that it is smart because it is not a kind of power based on might alone. It is based on legitimacy.
“We need people around the world to see the United States more broadly. They need to see that it is a complex country with a lot of people and a lot of different things going on. I think it builds a U.S. image that is positive and will enhance national security.”
