Wargaming the future – part II

We just posted Gerry Gilmore’s American Forces Press Service piece covering the media availability on the CCJO wargame Vice Adm. Harward, our deputy commander, and Rear Adm. Davenport, our joint concept development and experimentation director, did yesterday.

Looking backward at what deterrence meant during the Cold War is helping to inform what it will mean for the force of the future.

A quote from Vice Adm. Harward:

“How does this deterrence work when we’re dealing with nonstate actors who are empowered with technology and weapons that have significant impact upon the tactical and operational, if not the strategic level?”

  1. The CCJO clearly shows a new direction for the services, in particular, for the security and stability operations missions. Acknowledging the complexties of multi-agency goverance will hopefully challenge the other agencies (State, DHS, etc.) to produce complimentary policies that will work in conjunction with CCJO. This is necessary to ensure that when they are the “lead agency” on a civil defense or reconstruction project, it is clear how they engage and work with Joint Forces and participate within a common governance architecture.
