Editor’s note: Over the next several days, various Coalition Warrior Interoperabilty Demonstration (CWID) participants will be providing their candid observations from the demonstration. U.S. Navy Cmdr. Robert Green gives his latest entry from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division in Dalgren, Va.
One of the interesting aspects of the CWID is not only that you get to interact with our coalition partners but, because joint is also part of coalition, you get to work more closely with other U.S. military branches and see some of their technology in action. Interoperability Trial (IT) 2.21 Overhead Persistent Infrared Net-Centric Demonstration System (OPIR NCDS) is one example of such technology.
This IT is demonstrated by U. S. Air Force Capt. Brady Bradesca and shows how infrared sensors are used to provide important information to the warfighter. Although this technology was initially developed to provide early cues to missile defense radars, it also has other applications. Not only can this technology improve situational and battlespace awareness for the warfighter and combatant commander, it also has potential applications in personnel recovery from downed aircraft, for example.
CWID is providing an opportunity to demonstrate this technology to other services and encourage some out-of-the-box thinking on potential applications.
