USSOUTHCOM deputy commander talks about JTF-Haiti experience at JECC conference

Army Lt. Gen. Ken Keen, U.S. Southern Command’s deputy commander, discussed his experience standing up Joint Task Force-Haiti in the wake of that country’s massive earthquake during his keynote address Tuesday at the Joint Force Enabler Conference in Portsmouth, Va. New JKO course launches

A new Joint Knowledge Online course designed in cooperation with the Joint Irregular Warfare Center allows warfighters, civilians and contractors to learn about the nature of counterinsurgency.

The distance learning course allows users to interact with the course, to gain an understanding of COIN. Marty Vozzo, JKO deputy program manager, said that the training would benefit users at all levels.

“We view this as part of the joint training enterprise, where civil servants, contractors and service members, from E-1 to O-10, can get the important training that fits with the secretary of Defense’s training priorities.”

Salute to Veterans tix become available Sept. 25

Talking joint medicine with the command surgeon

Navy Rear Adm. Michael H. Mittelman recently became only the second Navy Medical Service Corps officer to earn a second star and is preparing to leave USJFCOM for U.S. Pacific Command at the end of August after nearly two years serving dual roles here and as Allied Command Transformation’s chief medical adviser. I recently had the opportunity to chat with the admiral about his time here, the challenges facing his replacement and his thoughts on the present and future of joint medicine on the battlefield. EC 10: That’s a wrap

After two long weeks, the team and I have gone our separate ways: MC2 Cassatt back to San Diego and Staff Sgt. Valentine and I back to the Virginia humidity.

Empire Challenge 10 was an interesting experience. It’s one thing to read about all these technologies, but seeing them working and communicating really help explain what it is we are doing here. It also showed me some things that will definitely benefit my Army brothers in future when they deploy.

JECC sends aid to flood ravaged Pakistan

USJFCOM’s Joint Enabling Capabilities Command is sending its personnel to Pakistan to aid relief efforts in the wake of massive flooding in recent weeks. Roughly 30 specialists from the command’s elements left Thursday and today. JECC’s Whitney Williams has more here.
